HITACHI VRF SYSTEMS
The Best Commercial Parts and Service

Hitachi VRF Systems: Technology that leads to a whole new level of performance.
Hitachi is the world's third largest manufacturer of VRF devices.
Johnson Controls has invested $2.8 billion in buying 60% of Hitachi's Air-Conditioning division, bringing the best of both worlds to the North American market: unmet VRF innovation from a major VRF supplier through one of the most known manufacturers of traditional HVAC systems and controls.
Johnson Controls recently launched the second generation of VRF HVAC equipment for the North American market, the Hitachi Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Gen II.

Why is Hitachi top 3 in VRF?
- Unmatched efficiency: outstanding performance with an average energy savings of up to 39%Â compared to conventional HVAC systems for some applications.
- High customization: versatility to configure a specific modular system according to each project’s exacting specifications, with options including heat pump and heat recovery systems and a variety of fan coil options.
- Engineering freedom: allows designers to select ducted systems with long or short runs or, non-ducted systems that allow much lower clearance between building floors (and consequently reduce construction costs).
- Whisper quiet operation: Amazingly quiet comfort, precisely delivering the right amount of heating or cooling to each area.
VRF Systems: The HVAC market's fastest-growing segment.
In the United States, Variable Refrigerant Flow systems are becoming increasingly popular as demand for zoning systems, sustainable solutions, and energy efficiency continues to grow. In fact, in the American HVAC industry, VRF systems are the fastest-growing segment.
Why?
VRF systems successfully balance building comfort and performance by supplying each room with the right amount of heating and cooling.
By using DC inverter scroll compressors to save energy and avoid frequent cycling wear and tear, VRF technology achieves this balance. Such compressors increase the efficiency of air conditioning by modulating the supply of refrigerant to each particular area to meet demand, and are the cabal for heat transfer from one area to another.

The new generation of Hitachi VRF: the most robust and energy-efficient HVAC system has just improved.
Hitachi VRF is building on game-changing technologies that make variable refrigerant flow systems the most versatile and energy-efficient HVAC solutions in the world.
Hitachi VRF Gen II offers increased performance, more development flexibility, new business opportunities and exceptional control with an extended, re-engineered equipment line and innovative technology.
Advanced technology allows cooling when outdoor ambient temperatures are as low as -10 ° F or as high as 122 ° F (-10 ° F – 75 ° F in simultaneous heating and cooling mode) and heating when outdoor ambient temperatures are -13 ° F to 59 ° F (-11 ° F – 59 ° F in simultaneous heating and cooling mode).
VRF Systems: The HVAC market's fastest growing segment.
- In the ratings that matter most for VRF engineering, Hitachi VRF systems rank impressively high: simultaneous cooling and heating efficiency (SCHE) and integrated ratio of energy efficiency (IEER).
- SCHE refers to VRF systems with characteristics of energy recovery. The ratio of total capacity (heating and cooling) of a system to effective power consumption is defined.
- The SCHE ratings of Hitachi VRF systems are as high as 32.2.
- IEER communicates cooling efficiency at different part-load conditions based on weighted operation.
- The IEER ratings for Hitachi VRF systems are as high as 26.5.
- The Coefficient of Performance (COP) ratio expresses a heat pump’s efficiency while in heating mode. Two specific ambient temperatures, 47 ° F and 17 ° F, are measured according to AHRI.
- Hitachi has values up to 4.25 and 2.78 for COP 47 ° F and 17 ° F for COP.

Hitachi VRF: The Best Choice For Multi-zone Buildings

Office Buildings
Research shows that temperature and humidity directly affect the productivity of employees.
The level of concentration of workers decreases and they become more likely to feel sleepy when a room is too hot. You have to deal with complaints and illnesses if a room is too cold.
In order to maintain comfort and concentration, Hitachi VRF provides the exact temperature.
Additionally, energy efficiency and quiet operation increase the value of the building and lead to LEED certification.
Healthcare
In hot environments, bacteria flourish, and incorrect temperatures jeopardize the safe environment of hospitals and clinics at risk.
It also causes stress for patients doctors, and staff, having an impact on either recovery or productivity.
Hitachi VRF systems slow the growth of bacteria and viruses and help to keep temperature and humidity at the optimal levels recommended by ASHRAE ensuring the safety of the environment

Education
Studies show that there is a significant difference in learning depending on environmental factors. Ambient temperature affects the ability of students to absorb information and concentrate on classroom activities.
If a classroom is too hot or too cold, the minds of the students keep reminding them to do something about it. This can lead to cognitive challenges and an impact on their motivation, if not also their health (with asthma, wheezing, etc.).
Hitachi VRF creates the perfect learning atmosphere and climate by maintaining temperatures in classrooms year-round between 71 and 77 degrees Fahrenheint.
Hospitality
In the hospitality industry, air conditioning is more important for reputation than you think.
Hotels that do not provide their guests with quality air conditioning have lower ratings and more complaints, 7 out of 10 guests say having a good AC system is a requirement.
You have most likely been a hotel guest before and had to deal with a load AC unit or didn't get cold enough, ruining a good night's sleep.
Hitachi VRF offers guests unmatched experience from the moment of check-in until it's time to travel back, keeping all floors at a comfortable temperature and providing the comfort of home away from home.

Government
Government buildings have an important effect on how tourists view the public system, illustrating the care and value given to the people.
Inadequate air conditioning temperatures are a sign of employee disrespect and visitor disservice, and lack of efficiency and noisy HVAC systems give the impression that the public system is outdated and sluggish.
Hitachi VRF welcomes every person – employees, public figures, and civilians – to the building and shows that the government is making smart investments, taking care not only of the public contribution but also of issues like global warming.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average life expectancy of a VRF system?
According to the ASHRAE handbook, 15 to 20 years is the average life expectancy range for air-cooled VRF systems.Â
Can VRF condensing units be installed indoors?
Yes, both VRF systems, air source or water source, can be installed indoors.
How is such excellent part-load efficiency possible with a VRF system?
Are oil traps required for Hitachi VRF systems?
Due to low compressor discharge, oil traps are not needed on VRF systems. To recover any oil discharge into the piping network, a regular oil recovery process is performed automatically.
Is continuous heating capability during defrost cycle possible with Hitachi VRF?
Yes. During the cold-weather seasons, VRF condensing units may accumulate frost buildup during heating mode. To combat this, a defrost cycle begins by temporarily switching a segment of the overall system to cooling mode, thus allowing discharge vapor to melt the accumulation of frost on the condenser coils. This ability ensures constant comfort for occupants within the building.Â
When using the Hitachi VRF Smart Gateway for BMS integration, how much total equipment can be connected?
64 total VRF systems, up to 160 Indoor units, and up to 200 total Indoor and Outdoor units.
What are the consequences of incorrectly sized pipe diameters (either too large or too small)?
The ability to return oil is affected, which can result in long-term compressor failure. On the flip side, if the diameter of the piping is too low, there may be issues with capacity reduction and issues with pressure could occur.
What is the maximum distance between condensers and evaporators for vertical piping?
The maximum vertical distance is 360 ft. when the outdoor unit is located above the indoor unit.
For branch/unit isolation are valves required or recommended?
Generally speaking, to accommodate future unit repair or replacement it is recommended to install isolation valves.
If needed, can the VRF system energize an ancillary heat source?
Yes. For backup, emergency or supplementary heating purposes, an ancillary heat source, such as an electric duct heater or baseboard heat, can be energized.
What are the lowest recorded ambient operating temperatures for the latest VRF generation for simultaneous heating/cooling and heating modes?
Cooling: -10oFÂ
Simultaneous heating and cooling: -10oF
Heating:-13oF
When ambient temperatures are outside the published range, will the Hitachi VRF system experience a fixed, temperature-based shutoff?
No. Unlike others, although at a derate, Hitachi VRF will continue to operate outside the published range Nevertheless, if environmental pressures are surpassed for extended periods of time, the systems may eventually reach conditions where the outdoor device is stopped for safety on a high or low pressure sensor.
When a power failure happens on-site how will the VRF system restart operation?
All controllers have a backup memory. After power restoration, units can restart in the mode prior to the power failure.
Can I lock out an individual VRF compressor in case of an emergency, if required?
Yes, individual compressors can be locked out.
